Today I heard several Blackpoll Warblers singing in my year, which is incredible! It’s not incredible because there are Blackpoll Warblers here, it’s miraculous because I’m able to clearly hear them!
I began to loose my high end about 30 years ago, and recently found everything above a Redstart was gone for me. I’m now using the Songfinder Digital Listening Device that I bought on eBay, and I can find even distant Waxwings again. Never birding in the spring without it again. Back to Summerhill!

I also used a Songfinder for a year or two but no longer do, relying on my
hearing aids. Anyone interested in acquiring the Songfinder should email me
privately.

I’ve used a SongFinder for years and don’t know why I waited as long as I did to purchase the device. With the minimal setting (1/2 frequency cut with the 6000Hz cutoff) I can again recognize all the warbler songs - and a few others that sing around or above 6 kHz. The songs have the same cadence and pitch changes that I had learned when I first started birding, they are just at a lower overall pitch. The learning curve to adapt to this change was negligible. Other than Paul’s which appears to be on the market, SongFinders are no longer commercially available - since 2018. I’ve communicated with the guy who developed them and here’s what he is working on now: https://hearbirdsagain.org/problem-and-solutions/ https://hearbirdsagain.org/problem-and-solutions/

Wow, that sound promising! Wonder why the Songfinder went out of production with all of us aging baby-boomers loosing our upper end hearing?
I was lucky and got one on eBay for about $58.00.
The Songfinder sure works for me, won’t bird without it.
Wonder what other birders suffering with hearing loss use?

Well, it certainly won’t be for everyone, due to cost. I almost gave up birding several years ago, including my Breeding Bird Survey route, due to high frequency hearing loss and asymmetric hearing loss (couldn’t figure out which direction the bird was singing from).
I eventually went to an audiologist and was fitted with high end hearing aids that were highly customizable to match your hearing loss. I told her I was a birder, so she even gave me a program setting that boosted the higher frequencies for when I go birding. Wow! I could hear the birds again and locate them by sound.
But, yes, the problem for many is cost. They’ll set you back a few thousand bucks. But, hey, how many of you have spent that much on optics? Or birding trips? Something to think about.

I liked Songfinder too, but the new Merlin and Birdnet are SO much better! They have really beefed up Merlin.
