My wife and I, rather unexpectedly, have sold our condominium and are about
to become live aboards. What are the options for getting an address? Our
permanent marina will accept package delivery but not be our 'address' for
regular mail.

John:
If you are going to permanently live in the marina then you have a couple of
options:
Get a PO box at the USPS- This is a little beaurocratic. But the last
time I did it I gave them the marina address and a copy of the marina slip
rental agreement and they were happy with that. But who knows what they want
today.
Private mailbox, like Mailboxes etc. These are a lot easier to get, less
paperwork, but IMO aren't as good. You don't have a totally secure address
like you do with the USPS.

A third option, if you are traveling, is to use a private mailing service, such as the one in Green Cove Springs. They will accept mail and packages, hold them until you notify them of wehn and where to send it.
For us, we just have a relative hold our mail, and then they forward it to us, when we let them know when and where.

We use the relative but if cruising full time and not having a home and
needing a resident state

This is an excellent service that will give you an address for residency
that is not a PO box. A PO box as an address is a non performer for many
administrative life functions e.g. drivers licenses, etc.. Probably the
largest zip code in the country. Many cruisers etc use this service and
Florida (no income tax) as their permanent residence.

John: We recently moved aboard full time, too. We use the local UPS Store
address as our "mailing address" and our marina address as our "resident"
for drivers license and voting. So far it's working well for us. The UPS
store will accept packages and we can also ship them to the marina, although
the marina doesn't want us to send all of our mail here. We intend to be
full time cruisers in a year or so and we'll probably go with St. Brendan's
Isle when the time comes.
