That's  sage advice. Hard won I'm sure!

Also a  great topic as you said and just one of many we'll be investigating
while planning our cruise to Alaska via Hawaii. T-Pec formation as you
describe is easy to comprehend, looking at a topo map.

Question  - Where would you jump off if going to Hawaii from the Canal?

Personally, I've lost a lot of time over the years

taking a short cut and  having weather beat me back.
I'd rather be wrong by having the weather  pleasantly
beautiful (at which point you can angle out to sea and
regain a  little time) than be wrong the hard way:
expecting beautiful weather and  getting surprised 40
miles to leeward of any  protection.
