A smoke detector placed in the engine room would probably not be audible in
the saloon due to the usual ER sound insulation and thick floor. I remove
the beeper from the smoke detector and mount it on a wall inside the cabin.
The wires from the beeper go back to the smoke detector mounted inside the
ER. It is now audible even with e the engine running.

Richard:
I installed 4 First Alert interconnected Wireless Smoke Alarms on my old
Viking. One in the engine room, one in the aft cabin, one in the salon
and the 4th one on the bridge. When one goes off, they all go off.
I have been using this setup for 4 years with no false alarms. I was
concerned about false alarms from the engine room but that has not been
an issue. P/N is SA511CN2-3ST.
Cheap but effective fire alarm that is independent of any other boat system.
