John,
Two suggestions.  Find the closest US location and start there.  If you have
someone to help you, set the receiver by pressing"menu" the 7,4,5.  This takes
you to the signal meter.  Now slowly rotate the dish while your helper reads
the signal meter.  You can approximate the necessary elevation by lowering the
dish one degree for every 60 miles you are north of the starting point.  It is
kind of a hunt-and-peck approach but seems to work well for me.
If you don't have a helper, you can purchase a satellite signal finder for
about $20-$25.  It is a meter which is temporarily installed in-line.  It
allows you to manipulate the dish and see the change in signal strength
without even seeing the TV. This is probably similar to the device the DirecTV
guy uses to fine-tune your installation at home.

just raise the volume on the TV... the receiver  signal meter has an audio
tone which can easily be heard thru decks and bulkheads...  with FMTV, you
can usually watch the screen anyway while turning it, and just go to the
dish to adust the elevation
