Niagara Frontier highlights received the past two weeks,
November 19 through December 3, include WHITE-EYED VIREO,
BLACK-HEADED GULL, SNOWY OWL and BL.-GR. GNATCATCHER.
November 26 and 27, a rare species at an unexpected time of
year - a WHITE-EYED VIREO at Tifft Nature Preserve in
Buffalo. Also at Tifft, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 2 GRAY CATBIRDS,
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD and a single COMMON REDPOLL.
Gulls on the Niagara River were highlighted by a BLACK-
HEADED GULL, November 30, on the lower river, at the
roosting rocks upstream of the power plants. Other gulls at
Niagara Falls and the power plants - LITTLE GULL, THAYER'S
GULL, ICELAND GULL and L. BLACK-B. GULL. Single, juvenile
HARLEQUIN DUCKS at the power plants and off Goat Island
above the falls. 200 TUNDRA SWANS at the control gates in
Ontario. And, two very late BL.-GR. GNATCATCHERS on November
30 at Dufferine Islands park in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
At the Niagara River source, two GREAT EGRETS reported at
both the Fort Erie Nichols marina shore, and the north end
of Unity Island in Buffalo. Also off Unity Island - 3
COMMON LOONS, 12 HORNED GREBES and numbers of BONAPARTE'S
GULLS. And, two HARLEQUIN DUCKS have been residing along the
Bird Island Pier below the Peace Bridge.
First report this season of SNOWY OWL - November 28, on the
Niagara Peninsula of Ontario, along Highway 20 just west of
the Welland Canal in Thorold. BARRED OWLS reported at Tifft
Nature Preserve and in the Town of Boston. And a residential
GREAT HORNED OWL, in a maple tree on Koster Row in
Eggerstville.
Late season OSPREY, November 26, over Medina in Niagara
County.
On Lake Erie, Dunkirk Harbor is already attracting winter
waterbirds, including COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, RED-NECKED
GREBE and diving ducks, plus BALD EAGLE, PEREGRINE FALCON,
and a lingering CHIPPING SPARROW in the Main Street beach
vegetation.
And, BLACK VULTURES continue to roost with TURKEY VULTURES
on roof tops in the Village of Lewiston.
The BOS December meeting will be the annual holiday party on
Wednesday, December 9, at 7 PM at the Buffalo Museum of
Science. Bring a desert or drink to share; visitors are
always welcome at BOS meetings.
