<<<< Here are some tactics for organizing boat documentation. Use 3 ring
binders.>>>>>
We also use those clear plastic page protectors. They are top-loading,
so small papers don't fall out. We can put skinny manuals, warranties,
and other paperwork that comes with "stuff" into the sleeve and it fits
neatly in the three-ring binder without having to punch it. I have
another cloth-covered, zippered three-ring binger for important papers:
documentation, registrations, insurance policy, etc. I slip these
documents into the plastic page protector too. It makes is easy to pull
things out and to back them back where they belong.
We have a notebook for Engine/Propulsion, Electrical, Cabin, Deck, and
Electronics. This system works most of the time.

Along these same lines we have 11 Loose-leaf Binders with all boat info in
them.
Below is the Index that Pat has prepared . A copy is at the front of each
binder. She also has the name on the spine of each.
Several , such as Trip Info have morphed! After completion of long trips
that info is removed from the boat and kept at home to save space.

Good Poop? Is that your marine sanitation chapter? ;-)
I also use the three ring binder format with the plastic protector pages.
Not quite as many as Charles, but mine are focused on the boat systems and
equipment.
One thing I've been doing is downloading all the equipment and instrument
manuals I can find in .pdf format, even if I have the hard copy. You can
usually find these on any decent manufacturer's site. Eventually I plan to
scan in all those one and two page equipment sheets and go as digital as
possible. Of course, I won't throw the paper away, it'll just retire to the
library instead of the flybridge.

I recently discovered a free downloadable Windows program that converts
anything that you can print into a .pdf file. It sets itself up as another
printer and when you go to print a document you just select PDF instead of
your printer. Then it asks what you want to name the file and creates it.
You can also scan a document and then send it to Primo PDF.
It is called PrimoPDF and available free at:
I have been using it for a month or so with no problems. I am creating a
library of manuals on the hard drive with backups on CDs.
No connection other than it works well and is free. Hard to beat a deal
like this.

K,
No. ( and Pat would add, "Potty Mouth", :-) ))) It is all of the
articles that I have clipped from boating publications since 1972.
The term actually has a law school etymology as being the "meat" of a case
or judgment of a court.
By the way those volumes hold dozens of wiring diagrams for all that I have
added over the yrs. in addition to notes on HOW various repairs and
installations were made. ----So that I need not reinvent the wheel.
