I just purchased a the latest Nokia 9210 phone/PDA, ostensibly for land-based mobile email use. I cannot praise it enough. I'm freelance and am now completely freed from running home either to work or check email. The screen is small but astonishingly clear, even in tropical sunlight. What goes for land should follow for coastal cruises. I'm about to embark on a 600 mile trip from Singapore to Phuket. I know there won't be a signal all the time but I hope to be able to keep in touch with family and clients fairly efficiently. I'll report back.
