I am looking for an online source for 12 v interior lights.  I am
looking for both the "hockey puck" type lights to install under the
cabinets in the galley and some very thin fluorescent tubes to
install on either side of the mirror in the head.

Home Depot seems to only carry 120v hockey pucks.

Thanks

Jim

I take it you mean others than West Marine et al. Best sources of 12V stuff
are the solar power sites. Check out:

RV stores and sites have lots of 12V stuff as well.

I've used quite a few of the fixtures from this company, and converted most
of my old incandescent 12 volt fixtures to xenon bulbs from them. I've never
had much luck with the 12v fouoresent fixtures.

They have xenon G4 bulbs for $2.45 ea.

Jim, look at those lights at Home Depot again.  If they are what you want
and are at the right price, you'll probably find that they run on a 110 VAC
"wall wart" that transforms house current into 12 volts DC.  If so, just
toss the transformer and you've got ready-made hockey puck lights at an
attractive price.

That's how the old ones used to be, but when I was looking for lights a year
ago the ones like that at our local Home Debit didn't have the transformer
any more. Don't know it the fixture has an internal transformer, or it they
are just 110v lamps.

Most likely  the transformer is internal.  mine were.  The clue is to
look carefully at the actual bulb.
you may need a magnifying glass  bu tread the voltage laser printed on
the actual bulb glass near the base.
I bought some  halogen lights form Home Depot and removed the  internal
transformer  for use in my RV directly from the battery.

If you are getting your Xenon bulbs from an industrial source,  get the
14V version  rather than the 12V type.
14V last much longer  on a 12V DC system  being held at 13.8  - 14.2V by
a charging source  fed by shore power.  (or an alternator.)

As of this morning, Home Depot Canada still stock halogen "puck" lights.
They come three to a package and have a small "wall wart" transformer
that you chuck and run then direct from 12 volts. I have several sets in
the house running from 110 that have been in service for over 5 years
and they are still going strong so they are fairly well made. I am in
the process of installing 14 in all on the boat that will run from the
12 volt system. Canadian cost is about $ 30.00 a set so your cost in the
US should be less. I think that if Home Depot Canada stocks them, the US
store should as well.
Flour. tube lights are a real pain and hard to get small enough for a
boat - try a bigger RV store, they just may have what you are looking for.
YMMV

I highly recommend Sea Gull puck lights. I've used about 50 of them on Island
Eagle. They are about $10 each, which is a bit steep, but they are well made.
However, if you watch, they do come up on eBay. I bought 100 (!!!) from a
lighting store going out of business for the whopping price of 40 cents each!

Here's what they look like:

For what it's worth, I also used another Sea Gull product named Ambience. You
run a special wire (looks and feels like 16 gauge lamp cord) and then clip
the lights right to the cord, which pierces the insulation. Worked like a
charm for accent lighting in the saloon and under the cabinets.

Frilight is a Swedish company  that makes a variety of puck lights both
surface mount and recessed.  I paid around $10 each in smal quantity.
The other type Scot mentioned is often called "festoon" lighting and is
distributed by commercial  display  lighting  supplies.
If you look up  industrial or commercial  display lighting experts,  you
can  find someone near you  that handles these products.
Also remember rope lighting. Often used for outdoor display  they are
waterproof for cockpit and swim grid  installation. they uses only a few
watts per linear foot and the LED variety  even less.

I have been using the Home Depot puck lights for a couple of years.
Originally the 12 volt ones with the transformer but I have not found them
to be available in my local Home Depots. I switched over to the 110 volt
ones but I have experienced a persistent problem with both types. They
apparently don't like the vibrations from my 6-71 diesel engines and often
after running for a while I find them broken from their mounts and dangling
by the cord. I originally thought I was over tightening them but after 5
have failed I have to believe it is the nature of these particular lights.
They are the perfect size but replacing them is a pain.

I am going to try some Sea Gull pucks and see if they hold up.
