View all threadsFor sale. 5500 W Yanmar Air Cooled Diesel Generator-$2000
We have removed this unit from our 42 foot trawler. This unit was purchased
new in 2008. We have used it for less than one hundred hours principally
because we have a four plate photovoltaic array which averages 20 A/per/hr
eight hour day. We are switching to a much more energy efficient
refrigerator, have a propane stove and so have no further need for this
excellent unit.
In trying to determine a fair price for this six-year-old unit low hour
unit, I have searched the web. The lowest price with tax on the web was
$3,200. Established Yanmar dealerships want a good deal more. I assume you
will search the web to find if my price is fair. Many generators are
powered by the L100 series Yanmar diesel engines, 7.4kw or 10 hp, but here
is the tricky part. Many of the advertised units do not have Yanmar power
heads i.e. the generator itself. Some advertise an output of 6500 W but on
the official Yanmar webpage there is only the 5500 unit discussed. So to
make a fair comparison make sure that there is a Yanmar label on both the
diesel engine and the power head. We will be posting pictures including the
labels on the engine and on the power head ON CRAIGSLIST.
We have used this generator when it was cloudy or rainy for at most three
hours a day to run a standard 2KW inverter/battery system.
If you have in mind to run the generator continuously i.e.24/7 for
air-conditioning this is not a unit for you, but you need a watercooled
Westerbeke or the like. These units weigh 400 pounds where the far simpler
air cooled Yanmars weigh 175.
The engine conforms to the environmental standards of California and the
EPA. Full details of the specs are in the pictured spec plates. 42Amps are
supplied continuously but I would never run it at that level. If you need
42Amps continuously you need an eight or ten KW unit. Our unit was carried
out of the bilges by two strong men whereas Westerbeke requires a crane.
Our unit never once failed to start and is as we speak it is in good
operating condition.
With these considerations in mind I have decided to ask for $2000. If I
cannot find a buyer at what I consider this fair price. I will take it up
to North Carolina to use as a domestic generator backup system.
I’ll be happy to discuss the details, e.g. freight, by email or by phone
