Clark Atlanta University News February 17, 2023 Clark Atlanta University will hold a press briefing announcing the relaunch and renaming of the Southern Center for Studies in Public Policy to the W.E.B. DuBois Southern Center for Studies in Public Policy on its campus Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the Thomas W. Cole Exhibition Hall. George T. French Jr., Ph.D., president of Clark Atlanta University, has renamed the Southern Center for Studies in Public Policy after W.E.B. DuBois and has placed it in the Department of Political Science. "Dr. DuBois was an eminent scholar who spent much of his career at Atlanta University conducting cutting-edge research on the social and political conditions of Black people in the South," said President French. "It is only fitting that this policy center bears his name." Dr. Joseph L. Jones, an Associate Professor of Political Science, has been named Executive Director, and Dr. Hashim Gibrill has been named Global Policy Coordinator. The DuBois Policy Center will focus on three areas: American South, Global South, and Universities Initiatives. "I am happy to continue in the tradition of Dr. DuBois and the former Executive Director, Dr. Bob Holmes, to conduct serious research that leads to real policy solutions for Black people here and abroad," said Dr. Jones. The DuBois Policy Center will revive the Status of Black Atlanta and Georgia Legislative Review, for which it was known for decades. Moreover, it will also commit to expanding its research into the African Diaspora. The media and public are invited to attend this auspicious occasion. DuBois Southern Center for Studies in Public Policy In 1968 Clark College established the Southern Center for Studies in Public Policy (SCSPP) as a research, training, teaching, and community outreach organization to more effectively provide needed services to people of color and low-income communities. It was designed to serve as a mechanism for faculty and students to develop competence in the formulation, assessment, and implementation of public policies which impact African Americans and low-income people in the South. With the consolidation of Atlanta University and Clark College in 1988 to form Clark Atlanta University (CAU), the SCSPP's capabilities to conduct research/policy analysis on issues impacting the poor and people of color in the South were greatly enhanced. Today, it focuses on public policy research on Black people in the American and Global South. About Clark Atlanta University Clark Atlanta University was formed with the consolidation of Atlanta University and Clark College, both of which hold unique places in the annals of African-American history. Atlanta University, established in 1865 by the American Missionary Association, was the nation's first institution to award graduate degrees to African Americans. Clark College, established four years later in 1869, was the nation's first four-year liberal arts college to serve a primarily African-American student population. Today, with nearly 4,000 students, CAU is the largest of the four institutions (CAU, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Morehouse School of Medicine) that comprise the Atlanta University Center Consortium. It is also the largest of the 37-member UNCF institutions.
