I'd just like to say Thank You to Dave & Ginger Winston for not only
allowing people the opportunity for great views of the bunting, but for
even going out of their way to keep everyone updated! Not every rare bird
host welcomes birders with such open arms!

I'm hoping he'll still be there Tuesday when I can finally get down to see
him!

Those of you who get to Stamford regularly and bird Cove Island Park and
vicinity might want to consider joining the Cove Island Sanctuary. the
nominal membership fee helps support management in the park and keeps feed
in the bird feeders through the winter. and your accommodating host of the
Painted Bunting, Mr. David Winston and your ever vigilant sentinel Patrick
Dugan et al. have many man hours of blood and sweat invested in managing
and attending to the Sanctuary

Thanks for doing that Anthony. Folks, Cove Island  really deserves your support, and as Anthony realized, with all the people that came to see the bunting at Dave's house, many may not be aware of the sanctuary (home of the long-staying Fork-tailed Flycatchcer a few years ago but more importantly a significant stop over for migratory birds in a heavily developed part of the state).

Thanks for your e-mail. I would gladly make an annual donation but I see one problem. I live in Westchester and visit Cove Island Sanctuary at least once a week during Winter months but visitors who do not live in Stamford and do not have a (beach) permit for Cove Island run the risk of a parking violation fine ($60 ?) during those months when the beach is being used by residents. Years ago I used to work in Stamford and was able to obtain a parking permit. I have been told that non-residents can obtain a permit but at a cost of over $200.

Jim,
Even just a few winter time visits merits your support. You don't have to pay much and I think the annual membership fee is extremely reasonable. Even a small donation of $5-$10 helps keep those feeders filled through the tough winter months. I live in Stamford but do not have access to the sanctuary during summer months. The birding is better during the off-peak months anyway to be honest.
