A couple of years ago I installed one Mermaid 16.5K Btu reverse cycle unit
and one 12K, replacing old Lunaire 12K and 9K. I bought both Mermaids
from Defender. Installation was easy and they cool and heat the boat
much better than before and take significantly less current even though the
Btu ratings are higher. I would choose Mermaid again although I've had a
few problems. I'll send the details to you directly off-list.

I need some help from the phone gurus. I just bought
a Treo 650 and it works fine but I want to use it with
the unlimited data access capability as a modem to my
PC. Verizon technical support says that this is not
possible on the Treo 650 but is supported on the
audiovox 6600. The reason they say it doesn't work is
that the bluetooth implimentation on the 650 does not
include a selection to configure the phone as a modem.
Am I getting bad information or do I need to dump the
650 and get an Audiovox?

You're getting incorrect information from Verizon.
You'll need a software program called PdaNet to turn your Treo into a modem
for your PC. PdaNet is available at:

Quoting from their web site, PdaNet is:
Software to drive your Treo smartphone as a Wireless Modem
for your PC - PdaNet allows your PC to go online by connecting
to your Treo smartphone through the Hotsync USB cable (or
Bluetooth if you are using Treo 650).
While it is probably true that Verizon has disabled the Bluetooth DUN
profile allowing wireless connectivity, PdaNet also supports the USB cable
for direct connections.
I'm pretty sure that you can use the PdaNet software for free in trial mode
for a while to make sure that it all works. There is also an extensive FAQ
section on their web site which is worth going through.
I just got a Treo 650/Cingular myself (48 hours ago) and have been getting
nothing done because I've been playing too much. The 650 is an excellent
device and has many uses on a trawler beyond cell phone use especially if
you have an unlimited data plan:
- web access for weather
- web access for marina info
- web access for phone numbers, etc.
- backup chartplotter (don't get me started...)
- vessel management
- photoblogging your cruises
- tides and currents
- etc...
Web access on a small screen requires some getting used to. An excellent
resource that I've just started playing around with is:

When you enter a web site through skweezer, it squeezes the content before
sending the page to you. I've found this very helpful. You can use it on
your normal desktop to see what it does although you can't appreciate the
results until you're using it on a handheld computer.
Bottom line...the Treo 650 rocks.

Larry, I am not sure how Verizon has configured the 650. You could do a
search on one of the specialized Treo sites, or Mobile Burn or Howard
Forums. It should function just fine on a USB tether regardless. Since you
are sitting at the PC anyway, Bluetooth tethering doesn't gain you much.
Personally, I use a piece of software called PDAreach that gives you a
blown up picture of the Treo screen on your PC and allows you to use your
keyboard and mouse to control the unit.
If all you are looking for is a modem, why not just get the cheapest
handset that functions that way?
I seldom even use PDAreach, for my purposes the Treo gets me all the web
and e-mail functionality on its own little self.

The clerks at my local Verizon are very nice but frequently ill-informed.
I think there is a 3rd part solution, including a connecting cable, that
will do what you want.
I have a Treo 600 and once found such a product even though I ended up not
buying it.
