Does anyone out there have the charts and books from a recent Loop trip? Will be going by way of the Trent Severn River from Chesapeake Bay to Mobile.

We use TheCapn navigation program. Have been looking but not really been able to identify what electronic charts I need for Trent-Severn, Georgian Bay, North Channel to Lake Michigan, I have a Datamarine 7000XT but prefer the softcharts on the laptop.  Maybe Softcharts doesn't have anything for the Trent-Severn, Georgian Bay and North Channel, does anyone know for sure or is it best to go with the C-NT chips?

If anyone can give me a quick list I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

The upper part of the Tenn-Tom Waterway, from the Tennessee River, at
TTW mile 450, to Demopolis, at TTW mile 216, offers many marinas where
dockage, fuel and a variety of services are available. There are also
a number of anchorages. Some are better than others. The better
marinas include:
Bay Springs        mile 412
Midway Marina      mile 394
Columbus Marina mile 335
Demopolis Yacht Basin  mile 216
There are no marinas from Demopolis to Mobile Bay and only one fuel
stop, at Bobby's Fish Camp mile 119.  It may be possible to overnight
at Bobby's at a very limited space floating dock. If you happen to be
there between Thursday and Saturday you can get some absolutely
delicious fried Catfish, served up with cold beer and a lot of local
color. It is truly an outpost on this otherwise desolate stretch of
Tombigbee River. We have seen lots of wildlife on the river.

I strongly recommend Fred Myers' book: The Tenn-Tom Nitty-Gritty
Cruise Guide.
This little book describes the waterway and has a lot of tips about
anchorages, some good ones that may not be apparent, and other
apparently good ones that should be avoided.

PERSONAL  RECOMMENDATIONS ;
Restaurants:    Iuka;      Rib Cage (Bar B Q) via courtesy car
Jon's Pier (Seafood)    "
Columbus    Johnny's (I think that is the name, it is adjacent to
the marina)
Demopolis  New Orleans Restaurant (in the marina)
Red Barn Restaurant (take the courtesy car)

Look ahead at where you hope to be for each night and plan to stop
early enough that you will not have to be setting an anchor in the
dark. The waterway is narrow in places and no anchoring is allowed in
some parts, The tow boats travel at night but you should not.

I'm currently using Nobeltec with a Garmin GPS, an Autohelm Autopilot and
raster charts. I need to update my charts and thought that I would go to
vector charts. However, Nobeltec doesn't allow you to load ENC charts since
they want to sell you Passport charts.

The help files with the Nobeltec software (version 5.xx) are not very good,
especially the autopilot stuff. I spent an awful lot of time trying to get
the autopilot to work properly and certainly don't want to repeat this again
if I change software.

Has anyone any experince with Fugawi ENC Navigation Software and support?

Thanks

Steve,

We have been using a HP laptop computer (Windows XP) with Nobeltec Visual
Navigation Suite and purchased the following computer charts and Garmin 12XL
GPS hooked together.  The two Soft Chart International CD's for the US Waters
are great.  The Canadian NDI CD's are not quite as good, but OK as long as you
stay on the Great Loop Course.

Steve

I've had Fugawi for many years although I've never really had to depend
on it for navigation.  It seems to work just fine with my gps input and I
have never noticed an error or failure.

Regarding ENC charts, you can download several free viewers and
download some charts and compare them to the charts you are familiar with.
The NOAA website links to the free viewers.

I think the Fugawi Help Files are pretty good but there is no reference
to autopilots anywhere in them.  The closest topic is uploading and
downloading waypoints, routes and tracks to a gps.
