10/14 - the Maricostas Preserve on Christian Street in New Preston, off
Route 202 just north of the traffic light was alive today with sparrows - several
white-crowned sparrows, adult and immature, right in the parking lot and
scads of really bright palm warblers. Also one Lincoln's Sparrow, purple
finch, a flock of pipits and a kestrel. I went across the weedy fields full of
sparrows etc. from the main parking lot to the wooded area full of crab apples,
grapes and other yummy berries but it was quiet there. There is also a
small pull-off and entry at the northern end of Christian Street where it meets
202. If you don't have a lot of time, this area is always worth a quick
visit.
