Per the QC rare bird alert, all sightings but one of the ptarmigans were in an area about 400+ miles northwest of Montreal. According to the reports, some were seen eating on and by the road and by willow trees and weren’t very skittish. Lots of tracks, droppings and wing imprints were seen with the birds. That is very rugged sparsely-populated country up there, especially in the winter, so probably the only chance of finding them was if they happened to be along a road. One bird was seen about 250 miles south of there, still 150 miles nw from Montreal. If only...! I guess I’ll settle for having seen the hoary redpoll in Avon/Simsbury!
