I just found a WHITE IBIS at the Jared Elliot preserve in Guilford. Horrible looks, even through the scope, but definitely a White Ibis. Down in the marsh on the eastern side of the preserve across the river.

We all make mistakes, but this was a really bad one, and I have to share!
Cody Limber and friends visited the Jared Elliot preserve in Guilford to look for the White Ibis I reported earlier. As mentioned in my earlier report, it was distant and very tough to see, even through a scope.
I sent Cody a dropped pin at the position where I found the bird and they got on it, and a after careful review of digiscoped photos, the White Ibis turned out to be a piece of driftwood! The wood has a knob or branch, and there was some heat shimmer and a light breeze blowing, making the suggestion of motion.
Cody also noticed the movement, and we think it is actually some sort of grass that appeared to be the birds down curved bill. He also agreed that it was very hard to get in focus; and we think there must be some more grasses between the offending piece of wood and observers, tricking the eye that the object is moving.

All right birders - fess up. How many of those Merlins turned out to be

The legendary Jay Hand once thought a distant Clorox bottle was a Snowy Owl.
We all have made mistakes, it’s part of birding.
