Re: TWL: Consumer Reports for Marine Electronics?

Hi Terry

West Marine has some "guides" on their site. Not quite what you're
looking for, though. I'm not aware of a "Consumer Reports" style
publication for marine stuff. I don't even know of any boating magazines
that do the kind of head-to-head testing that woodworking magazines do
for tools.

When I was buying a suite of electronics 18 months ago, I found that the
best resource was, in fact, the people on this List. After looking at
catalogues, talking to store assistants, and then narrowing my choices
down to a couple of models I was willing to afford, I asked TWL for
opinions, and got lots of very useful user replies. I weighed the advice
I received, and am still happy with the selections.

Cheers, Garrett

There is a paper magazine (subscription only) called "Practical
Sailor" that does exactly that. They also now have a website where
subscribers can go for past articles and or order reprints. Although
Practical Sailor addresses mostly sailing stuff, they do get into
electronics, paint, anchors, tools and other general boating
interests. Furthermore there is a similar magazine for power. Perhaps
someone else can remember the name for you.

The sister publication for Practical Sailor is Powerboat Reports. They

share some of the same tests for electronics and general boating stuff. Both
are pretty good no advertising mags. Between them and the usually
enlightened personal opinions on the TWL, I can usually get a "feel" for
what would suit my needs (and personal style).
One bit of advise; don't feel you need it ALL right now. Get to know
your boat, develop your own style of cruising, listen to people who are
doing it similarly, and make your purchases based on what YOUR needs (and
wants) are.

Good advice.  And don't overlook any opportunity to go
aboard other's boats and try out their electronics
first hand.  One hands on session is worth a lot of
web recommendations.
