A conference call for the IMLA University Cities Work Group was held on January 16, 2020. At least 14 people were on the call.
There will be a second University Cities Summit this year, to be held in Tulsa OK, July 29-31. John Dorman of Stillwater OK was instrumental in setting this up. July 29 (Wednesday) will be a kickoff evening reception. July 30 will be a day of programming, with an evening event at a museum of western art. The program will conclude by noon on Friday, July 31. The Summit will be limited to no more than 50-55 participants. Watch for details from IMLA.
Topics for the Summit.
a. Methods of cost-sharing between universities and city government. Mike May of Madison WI is to contact Boston, but others are to think of potential examples and speakers who can address best practices even if on individual examples of partnering or working cooperatively on projects to save money. (Looking for volunteers!)
b. Game Day 2.0. All thought this would be a good topic because there were a number of items we could not cover in Columbia MO, but nobody stepped up to organize it. (Looking for volunteers!)
c. Transit issues large and small. Chris Connolly of Lincoln NE was going to take the lead I finding potential speakers.
d. Dealing with Recent rulings on Medians and Homeless. Looking at the Martin case and others. Tony Candotti (Sp?) of Santa Cruz CA was going to look for speakers from the 9the circuit and elsewhere.
e. Housing Issues, multi-family, limits on unrelated persons, elimination of single family zoning, etc. Tom Carr of Boulder CO was going to take the lead on this issue.
We are looking for any others who would be willing to take the lead on other topics.
Our next scheduled call is May 21. Planning for the Summit may require an additional call before then.
Additions or corrections welcome!
