I bought some 1/0 crimp lugs from Genuinedealz. I've heard good things about
them here and elsewhere, so I dove in.

The 1/0 terminals won't fit into my 1/0 crimper die. I called Genuinedealz
and they are telling me their 1/0 lugs are sized larger than household 1/0
lugs and I need a crimper that can do 2/0 crimps. How many sizes of 1/0 lugs
are there? Some of the crimp tools for this size run $300+, some are much
less. Any recommendations on a lower cost solution that works? Harbor
Freight has a hydraulic crimp tool that does 2/0.

Thanks

Ed,
The $70 hydraulic crimper at Harbor freight looks like it will do a god job
of crimping.  It uses replaceable dies, one set for each size of cable.  If
you have multiple sizes to crimp, this will slow you down.

The hammer-type crimpers (about $50 at West), work OK, but are not
convenient to use in tight places.  I use a 30" long compound-action crimper
with adjustable jaws that covers the range from #6 to #4/0.  Great crimps
and quick to use, but about $300.

Harbor Freight also sells a $15 compound crimper for the usual #22 to #10
wire terminals, made in Taiwan, not China.  It works well, almost as well as
the $50 Ancor crimper.  I have one in my toolbox for backup.

Ed,
Snip:"...Any recommendations on a lower cost solution that works? Harbor

I bought the harbor freight one and it works well but to crimp the 2/0 I had
to open up a die to fit using a grinder & metal file  (the dies are not that
hard).  It looks handy to also be used to swage and it comes with enough
dies that are easy to modify for other purposes.  Hard to beat for the money
for even comes with a spare set of o rings to rebuild the hydraulic ram.

Cheers,

Joe

Ancor makes a very basic crimp tool

will do up to 4/0, intended for use with a hammer, but I used a 4" vise
for more control and to enable me to get to crimps without tearing the
wire out. The vise method I found to work fine, you end up being a bit
of a contortionist in order to hold everything in place and crank the
vise closed, but it is a fraction of the cost of the hydraulic crimper.
As far as the crimp, it is a single dimple, and ABYC recommends a
4-sided squeeze like the hydraulic, but I've had no problems with any of
the connections I made with the Ancor crimper, they are very tight.
