Good News for boaters in the Great Lakes

Quoting from the Duluth News Tribune today, "Lake Superior rose by six
inches in June, double the usual increase for the month, and now sits 15
inches above its July level last year. The International Lake Superior
Board of Control reports that Superior sits just five inches below its
average level for July. . . . Except for a few, dry winter months, Lake
Superior has been on a rapid rise toward levels normal since September
after setting new monthly low water level records and brushing with the
80-year-old all time low water record. Lakes Michigan and Huron rose six
inches in June, when they on average rise two inches, and now sit six
inches higher than July, 2007 but still 14 inches below their long-term
average."

David, I don't know where these averages for Huron are coming from but I have been on Georgian Bay (the small body of water to the east of Huron) since 1961 and not seen water heights near that. If they are claiming the average is 14" higher than it is now,  well, I have some trouble believing those figures. Unless water levels in GB are somehow higher than the rest of the lake it is attached to.

If the water rose here 14" I would have to raise my dock that has been in place since 61.

It is nice to see the levels coming back to where they were 5-6 yrs ago but to say they are still 14" belove "average" well, that is hard to believe. My cottage stairs are 4-5 FEET above where the water is now and in 83 we were tying boats up to them. (If anyone wants pictures I can supply them) But that was an exceptional year.

From my point of view water levels here are pretty well back to where they were in the mid 80s but are about 4" below levels I remember as a kid.
