'lo All,
I have extensively traveled as has my wife, who managed several travel
agencies over the years.
I would most strongly recommend each and every person to have his own
passport. If, for some reason, a child on a parent's passport cannot stay
with that parent, gigantic problems can occur. Birth certificates suffice
when entering Canada, but the recognized and most widely accepted form of
identification is the passport. Don't leave the country without your own
passport, and one for each member of your crew/family/party, whatever.
Any knowledgeable travel agent can assist in getting passports. They are easy
to get. IMHO, there is no excuse for not having a passport when traveling
outside of the US. They are too easy to get, and readily solve many
potential problems.
