November is usually a benign time to make passage in the Western North
Atlantic and the Caribbean, yet I see no posts. Where are all the Passagemakers?
Where is Scott Bulger and the FUBAR boats? I've seen no posts from them
since mid-November.

Scott:
What's the marina like there in Mazatlan? Is it worth visiting? What do you
think the chances are of my getting a slip? We're thinking of starting our
trip south by visiting Mazatlan the third week in January.
Enjoy your cruise! Don't move so fast I can't catch the group.

Hi John!!!
November is usually a benign time to make passage in the Western North
Atlantic and the Caribbean, yet I see no posts. Where are all the
Passagemakers?
[scott] Passagemaking!!!!

[scott] Alanui, Paloma, Sanjaro, Wayward Wind and Samurai (all Nordhavns)
are in El Cid marina in Mazatlan. We have been loosly traveling together
since leaving La Paz a few days ago. Wayward Wind has been here in Mazatlan
for a bit longer, waiting for the Nordhavn folks to come do some warranty
work.
We had a glass smooth crossing of the Sea of Cortez two days ago. We had
waited three days for a "Norther" to subside. We then made the 6 hour trip
from La Paz to Muertos Bay, then the 28 hour crossing of the SoC the
following day. Yesterday was siesta day, to get my body clock reset.
I'll have much more to share soon, I'm working on stuff for my Dad's web
page and will post it here as well.
I believe Ken Williams is in Cabo and will head across on his way to Costa
Rica after Christmas?
Most of the FUBAR boats have either come across, headed north or owners have
headed home for the holidays, leaving their boats in marinas.
We plan a week here, a three day trip to PV, two weeks there, then 3 days to
Barra. Then it's hell bound for the Panama Canal (some logistical issues to
work through, but it's our goal!).
Found out you can ship a 49' boat from La Paz to Nanaimo BC for $11.000 usd,
offseason, meaning now. The boat should leave La Paz anytime and arrive in
BC on Dec 11 or 12 I think? When you consider the weather, the cost and the
time, that's a great price. This may influence our plans and timing for our
trip back. Sorry so few postings to PUP, one thing I've learned is how hard
it is to compose email at sea. Looking into the computer screen late at
night on watch or during the day can make you sick in a hurry. When in
port, the last thing I want to do is sit at a computer screen.
Anyway, rest assured we are out here getting it done, and having the time
our our lives.
One last thought. I had a slip in La Paz next to the most beautiful Willard
I've ever seen. This boat looked so new I thought it must have been
delivered a month or two ago. I found out it's Patrick's boat and
unfortunately he had traveled home for the holidays, so I missed a long
awaited meeting. Maybe on the way back?
Take care all, I'll get some updates to you soon!

Currently tied up at El Cid marina in Mazatlan MX
Hi Ken (and interested others)
Ken asked: What's the marina like there in Mazatlan? Is it worth visiting?
What do you
think the chances are of my getting a slip?
Scott: We are at El Cid, right inside the breakwater. Marian Mazatlan is
just a quarter of a mile or so further in. The docks are nice and there are
two nice pools. Limited resources here, but a short bus ride into town has
access to all the normal MX resort items. The beaches are ok, not as nice
as Cabo area. I think it's good for us, as this was a good place to cross
from La Paz and keep it to 27 hours. If we had tried to go to PV it would
have been two overnights and that's a bit harder given our crew of two. We
are looking forward to going into town tonight for the first time, so I
can't tell you much about it, but everyone we talk to says it's nice, so I'm
sure we will enjoy it.
As far as a slip, there are at least 3 slips where your boat would fit. Two
of them are open right now, so I'd say it's a matter of calling Gloria in
the office and asking if the dates you are interested in are available. A
word of note, there is a fair amount of surge here. Samurai, a N68 was
moving 5 feet in all directions until the mooring lines were doubled up.
That settled the boat down quite a bit. Even when it was moving around Rich
and Ann seemed to handle it just fine, it didn't seem to bother them at all.
If your looking for another place to relax and smell the roses, this is
another good one. Oh, it does seem to be greener here, not as arid as Baja.
I'm told the further south we go the more tropical it becomes.
Hope that helps, you might drop Niel or Rich a note and see what they think
Neil has been here a number of times and knows the lay of the land much
better than I.
Good luck!!! Looking forward to sharing an anchorage with you soon!

Steep discounts for last minute shipping is, I
believe, fairly common. The problem is, if the ship is
full or close to full or gets a last minute full-fare
customer, you could be out of luck. And the next ship
may be many months away. I'd imagine this works well
for someone who is okay with heading north on their
own bottom, but falls into a good deal. It may not
work well for someone who needs to ship their boat but
just wants to save money - that person may end up
missing the boat.
