Highlights of reports received May 19 through May 26 from
the Niagara Frontier Region.
Two exceptional rarities this week.
May 19, a MISSISSIPPI KITE at the Mud Lake Conservation Area,
north of Port Colbourne, Ontario. A first summer, sub-adult,
still present on the 20th and 21st, has been soaring and
roosting in the lake area. There are only three records of
MISSISSIPPI KITE in the BOS archives.
In the Southern tier, a species with only four records - a
PAINTED BUNTING, in the Cattaraugus County Town of Allegany.
A male bird, seen the 22nd through the 24th.
May 26, the second AMER. WHITE PELICAN in two weeks - a
single pelican on Lake Ontario at Sunset Beach in Orleans
County.
Nine shorebird species this week on the Lake Erie shore in
Ontario. Highlighted by three WHIMBRELS at Windmill Point,
plus BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, KILLDEER,
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, SEMIPALM. SANDPIPER,
LEAST SANDPIPER, and abundant DUNLINS.
Shorebirds also in the Town of Amherst - five SEMIPALM.
SANDPIPERS on Ridge Lea Road off North Bailey Avenue.
From Chautauqua County, 11 warbler species at Boutwell Hill
State Forest in the Town of Cherry Creek. Including LA.
WATERTHRUSH and CERULEAN WARBLER, plus OVENBIRD, BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, HOODED
WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, YELLOW
WARBLER and CHESTNUT-S. WARBLER. Also, over 35 BOBOLINKS at
Boutwell Hill.
Other reports this week - an unexpected, singing PINE
WARBLER, and a pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES at Old Fort Erie in
Ontario. MERLIN in North Buffalo. And, BALD EAGLE over
Cazenovia Park in South Buffalo.
