Ross,
Please stop! My phone is ringing constantly and my mailbox is full of offers
from all over the world. People are pleading with me to sell Seahorse;
asking how much I want and whether I'll consider taking their modern passagemaker
in trade! Besides, I don't want any jealous designers taking pot shots at me
or my boat. I guess most of them are still playing catch-up with Ed Monk's
designs. I have my 10-gauge at the ready! <VBG>
Best regards,
John Camm
As I have said before as a previous owner of Seahorse, a
53' Skookum (Great sea kindly boat in tough conditions) ..

Hello,
I once saw a 40+ foot coastal passagemaker called a "Skookum" fueling at
Brownsville Marina, homeport Port Orchard. This pleasure cruiser was
probably built on a proven fishing boat hull and had a nice pilothouse
arrangement. I did not see her name, but the captain said she was a
"Skookum" and he was headed up fishing in B.C., north of Vancouver Island.
He remarked that he would cruise @6knots, however, I think she was capable
of Semi/displacement speeds. I went home and tried to find a similar
sistership on Yachtworld and various other sites and to this day I've never
seen another one. Anyone know anything more about this vessel?
Back to the previous thread, I added a few thoughts to the outline.
Thanks,
David E.

The Skookum's were built I believe in the late 60's through the late
70's (My 53' was a 78 and one of the last hulls built (Probably total
built in the low 50's) and then finished by a private cruiser in the
early 80's). They were built in Port Townsend WA in the facilities
that has become Townsend Bay Marine and many of the 53's were designed
to be motorsailing trollers for the NW fisheries although ours never
had a main mast stepped and was always a passagemaker. They also made
47's which also were a beautiful hull and one of those still docks at
PT. I did run into a Canadian couple once with a 40' on the inside
passage but can't remember their name. They too were cruising and not
doing commercial work. Skookum also built one 62' +/- hull which is
rigged as a schooner and is docked in Port Townsend. I have run into
53's sailing in the ABC's and many still in commercial service along
the BC/Alaskan coasts over the years - none looking the same except
for the distinctive kick up in the aft bulwarks. I have also heard of
one in the Pacific Islands doing commercial fishing still. Someone or
some trawler magazine (Passagemaker?) should do a history of these
boats, they are a tribute to Ed Monks design concept for a seakindly
and rugged hull that can accomplish commercial and cruising
applications safely and economically. If you would like a pic of a 53'
let me know. Gd Bless - Ross 10&2

On the topic of how to restructure the topic, I feel that if you want to
discuss skookums, krogens, norhavns, etc, in detail, that you should probably
start another thread. We're gettin a little to much drift here. I would really
rather read about the wiki site or thoughts on how to put this info into a
usable format for future viewers. If I google PPM and get lots of hits about a
certain make of boat then our efforts here on the subject are diminished. >
