Free workshops for teens

The Tacoma Public Library's StoryLab is offering a series of free

workshop this fall especially for teens. These workshop explore voice
-over acting, digital photography skills, the spoken word in
performance and what it takes create and market your own brand
(whether you are a musician, visual artist, poet or performer). 
Unless otherwise noted, all workshops are held at the downtown Main
Library at 1102 Tacoma Avenue South.

Workshop attendance is kept small to insure personalized instruction

and advance registration is required. Register online at
www.tacomapubliclibrary.org (and follow the links to the event
calendar) or by telephoning the library at 253.292.2001. These
workshops are funded through a grant from the Paul G. Allen
Foundation.

  

PUTTING YOUR CAMERA TO WORK.

Saturday, October 19 @ Main Library (10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
Saturday, November 2  @ Moore Library (10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
Getting off auto mode may seem scary, but it doesn't have to be that
way. Understanding how exposure, aperture and iso work will give you
the chops to be a more confident photographer. In this free workshop
photographer Jesse Michener will break it all down for you in clear,
easy-to-understand language so you really get it. She will talk
about composition and post-processing choices. If you have a
smartphone bring it along. She will show you how to take amazing
photographs with your phone, talk about filters and apps, as well as
how to get those shots into the real world.

Bring your camera (if you have one - if not you can use one of

ours), your camera’s manual, your smartphone (if you have one),
walking shoes, raingear if needed, and a desire for adventure. Don't
forget your lunch!

In this day-long Voice-Over workshop, we will take a step-by-step
approach working as a voice-over artist - from working with a
microphone to the business side of being a successful voice over
artist. You will learn to read and interpret various types of text,
using your individual voice. You will learn the basics of staying
focused and able to perform under the pressure of a recording
session, including diction and relaxation exercises, and ways of
quickly and effectively interpreting copy, as well as taking
direction. You will have an opportunity to explore radio and
television ad copy, technical narration, and character work such as
video games. You will cover what to expect in a recording session,
from auditions to bookings. You will have the opportunity to rehearse
and record your own work.

Award Winning Voice Over Actor, Nicole Fazio's career break came

recording Hyundai Motor Company's National Television Campaigns;
announcing the Accent, Elantra, Sonata & Tiberon vehicles launched
her as the future of Voice Overs becoming one of the first and only
women to brand a car. Ms. Fazio was hand selected as announcer of,
Bare Escentuals, "makeup so pure you can sleep in it," creating an
industry prototype as the Voice of Beauty.

Free spoken word workshops with
Lucas Smiraldo, Tacoma’s Poet Laureate

StoryLab & Olympic Room, Main Library
Create poems and perform them with power, confidence and certainty.
Create original content that changes the air currents and shakes up
listeners. Make a poem that packs a wallop. Join Tacoma’s new poet
Laureate Lucas Smiraldo in a writing and spoken word workshop
designed to move your message from the paper to the microphone to
digital media, all in one day. Explore your writing voice and
performance identity. Folks who take this workshop will come away
with the ability to:

* Write original works of poetry with full of life and absent of

stereotypes
* Revise your works into lean pieces of spoken word
* Prepare performance for recording that will move new listeners and
viewers
* Develop finished audio works that can be partnered with various
forms of digital media
* Find renewed pride and power in their emerging voices

The presenter: Lucas Smiraldo is Tacoma’s Poet Laureate and a

multi genre generative artist. His recent works include a 17 track CD
titled Voice of the Americas which was coupled with an original score
from sound artist Wrick Wolff and a series of short films titled
“Slam Town”. Luke will publish two works of poetry including the
book “Practice” which will be coupled with original black and
white works from a local photographer. Luke has performed commissions
for the Tacoma Art Museum, The Museum of Glass, The Black Pilots
Association, Seattle Mayor’s Hip Hop Awards, Hempfest and many
others. He is currently developing a several new web series as
properties for his production company, Auricle.

  

TEEN LEADERSHIP SERIES

Thursdays at the Main Library
4 - 6 p.m., November 7 - December 5

Are you a motivated teen who hungers for success?  Do you want to be
a successful artist, photographer, musician, or filmmaker?  Do you
dream of protecting the environment, starting a business, or creating
change in your community?  If so, start here!

Through this series of free workshops at Tacoma Public Library's

Main Library and StoryLab, you will learn to define and build your
personal brand and then market yourself to the community. These
workshops will help you develop the tools you need to realize your
dreams

After completing this series of four afterschool workshops, you will

have new skills and a portfolio of photos, films, and writing samples
to promote yourself, your talent and your message.
