About a month or so ago, I reported getting in 4 Double-crested Cormorants with
neurological symptoms, and were found in Greenwich locations - 3 at Greenwich
Point. At first, I suspected botulism, however, after they all died, 3 were
necropsied and tested at UConn Pathobiology. Just received word that they
died from Newcastle's Disease, which I believe may be a first for CT.
Newcastle's Disease has been a problem along the west coast, has recently
shown up in cormorants in the Great Lakes region.
At this point, we have no idea what the source of this mini-outbreak is.
If any of you see any cormorants that are neurological, having difficulty standing,
walking, head bobbing, and onshore (sick birds will beach themselves), or
dead, let me know. DEP is very interested in monitoring this situation to see
if it goes beyond a flukey, one-time, very localized event.
In the same vein of diseases, West Nile Virus has been the worst this summer.
I've lost just about every Robin, Blue Jay, and most other nestlings, fledglings
this season due to the virus. It's been very heartbreaking.
Be sure to protect yourselves against mosquitoes when out birding.
