Hi Jeff-
Well, you could move to AGMs ;-D
Having had a 6-volt car battery blow the top of the center cell about a foot
from my face when I was 15 (I was smoking while checking the level of a
charging battery), I think you are wise to use goggles. My experience from
cautious filling of flooded batteries since that time has taught me that the most
violent reaction comes when squirting water directly down, causing it to go
down between the plates where it seems to form a bubble "deep" down which then
bursts to the surface. Yes, that causes splatter, as does a high charging
rate. Filling slowly, directing the stream onto the side of the fill hole
prevents this.

So what's the proper way of adding water to a battery cell?
It often does "spit" a little when adding some water but I haven't gotten
splattered yet.
