10/5 Milford, Milford Point - Our Sunrise Birding walk this morning found quite a variety of birds, some in good numbers, with a tally of 76 species. The main highlight was seeing the continuing regional mega-rare, CT-first ROSEATE SPOONBILL, which early on was roosting with egrets on the west end of the main sandbar. This pink wader was stunning to watch in the morning light as it also flew around before it eventually departed to the west and north. Other highlights included two late juvenile BLACK SKIMMERS, 30 Brant (our first of the season), 6 American Wigeons, a Clapper Rail, 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Peregrine Falcon, Common Raven, several Red-breasted Nuthatches, both Kinglet species, lots of sparrows including 2 WHITE-CROWNED and incredible close views of a few NELSON'S, and 7 species of warblers.
