Chris,
Some others have also expressed the thought that this may not be a hoax.
However, I have heard that this is not the first time that this photo and a
similar message have been sent out. It also appeared about a year or so
ago.
Further, it is hard for me to imagine that feathers would be mistaken for
fur. Lastly, the guy claims to have tried to feed the bird blood and a
cockroach in keeping with a Halloween type image of a bat. It sounds more
than a little bit "over the top."
If the guy who posted this thing is really from Brooklyn, he is most likely
descended from the guy in Brooklyn who famously "sold" the Brooklyn Bridge
to hundreds of unsuspecting tourists.

Taking a quick look makes me believe it's a fake. I agree with Charlie's
points plus the lighting is an intense point source, so the sun, and
the guy is wearing just a light shirt, so it looks like it was taken out of
doors earlier in the year or at a lower latitude than NY.

A Google search for similar images turned up at least 3 other copies of this one. One had a 2008 date.

Good enough. I'm glad somebody took the time to check it out anyway. It confirmed why I don't spend much time on that site.
I don't need Calliope Hummingbird for my Manhattan list anyway :)
