I read that older Racors [mine are '87] required an insert [washer?] when
using newer filters or else the filters would allow dirty fuel through [or
something like that]. 2 questions: 1 - how to I tell if the filers that I
have require the insert? 2- what are symptoms if I am using a filter without
the insert? Thanks.

You should go to the Racor web site. They have pictures of the housing and by comparing the pictures to the inside of your 500 housing you will be able to tell.
If you need the spacer and are not using it you are bypassing fuel.
The kit is # 152 and the spacers are free. If you need one it goes on first, then the filter.
Racor tech support is 800-344-3286.

if you don't use the spacer, some fuel will bypass the element and clog your
secondary... friend of mine had that happened on a genny... missed the
spacer and started cloging the secondary. Wehn the genny started acting up,
the primary looked clean, but the secondary was black.
it's needed on the older 500 series which have a fuel outlet near the top of
the tube, above the element if you dont' use the spacer. teh racor
insteructions included with elements show a picture of the filter, looking
from the top, if the the tube at the bottom has flat top surfaces, you need
the spacer. if it's not flat, you dont' need it.
i'm sure that diagram is on the racor site if the filters you have didn't
come with it and the spacer.

Bill, head to the Racor webiste for more information, but they sent me p/n
15211, spacer kit for my 500's. I use 2 micron and they changed from brown to
tan,and there is a noticeable conical indention in their bottoms where the
spacer sits. I dont know if this applies to the rest of the series....GEH

Bill If you Racor is from 87 you will need the insert. If the housing was
newer the filter would not fit with the insert. The problems that can be
caused will most likely get caught by you engine fuel filters. If dirt and
water is allowed to pass through to the engine you would have injector and
injector pump problems. The engine would be hard to start or idle rough and
run rough without being able to get to top end. The inserts should come in the
package with the filters. Chuck

I spoke to Parker about this about a year and a half ago. If in doubt they
suggested putting the insert in as it won't hurt anything. They have an 800
number you can call with questions (sorry I don't have it handy). Their
technical support is very good.
