I had what I thought was a magnificent fan for the aft stateroom. A 12 v dc RV
ceiling fan. And it was. . .but. The motion of the boat ate up the bearings
very quickly, so. . . I need some ventilation fans. Friend suggested Hella
fans as the very best. Said he bought some years ago. Cheap fans are $20,
Hell's're $80.
Well I looked up Hella fans and guess what. The HLL 006239002 is around $25
and the 265-003361002 is $70. The only part of the description is that the
latter is two speed. Can anyone on the list clarify or suggest another 12 volt
fan that might be better? I want a pair of them to circulate air in the aft
stateroom and another for the galley and main saloon.

I had several Hella fans on my prior boat and they worked fine except for
some problems with the rotary switch on one of them I ran across a good buy
on Caframo fans at Home Depot in Marathon, FL and bought a couple (Model
757). http://www.caframo.com/marine/marine_products_12voltfans.php
Later I played around with them and the Hella's, watching current draw on
the Link and subjectively evaluating air flow produced. My impression was
that the Caframo wins hands down, more air and using less juice. Also, it
is of sturdier construction. I have no experience with their newer Bora
Model. The 757 is a very nice product.

I would highly recommend the use of standard computer fans on the boat. The
good ones are built for continuous duty and have negligible current draw. I
use a number of them on Island Eagle, including two that I leave on 24/7/365.
If you want hi/lo speeds, it's trivial to wire up an inline resistor, and if
you really want to go all-out you can use a wire-wound potentiometer and get
variable speed. I've also mounted smaller (3") fans in standard ventilators,
so that they blow air out of the boat. They move about 50 times more air than
the wimpy fans that are normally in there.
I have had very good luck with both Papst and Panaflo fans, as well as the
non-name ones you can find at electronics stores. In any event, you are going
to notice that there is a direct tradeoff between airflow (in CFM), current
draw (in mA) and sound levels (in dB). You will need to decide what works for
you. If you expect to run the fan anywhere near a sleeping area, get the
lowest-noise one you can.
Mouser Electronics (www.mouser.com) is a good source of Papst fans and offers
cheap shipping.

The more expensive Hella fans are built with much better bearings and have a
lot longer lifespan. I can't remember the ratings but they were something
like 10 times the expected lifespan of the cheaper ones. I've had one over
my berth since 2001, and it runs about 8 months out of the year at night.
Mostly runs on low speed and not overly noisy IMHO. I'd buy another one in a
heartbeat. I also have one of their cheaper ones that gets occasional use in
the galley. Also running fine since 2001.

Another vote for Caframo's Boro fan. One started cutting off and they
replaced it for free right away with no hassles.
