Is this really a free transmitter, or do they just give you one if you sign up for their service?
Sounds like "free phone, if you sign up for the plan"

You get one if you sign up for a year of their service.

The unit is worthless without a service plan. So even if they gave you
one without requiring a service subscription what would you do with
it?
By the way, I have one and love it. Some of the best money I have
spend on boating accessories.

Well, if it costs $170, and they are giving it away free, I'd like to have one now and sign up for the program when I feel the need.? As opposed to signing up at a later date and paying the service fee AND the $170.
