The list has been having a good discussion on ropes to use in storm conditions but what about knots? Which are your favorites (the ones you know you can depend on) and in what application are they best applied?

Jill and I use a turn or two on pilings or Samson Posts, ending with a Rolling Hitch thrown around the standing part. Bitts get figure 8's ending with a Rolling Hitch around the standing part, and, for cleats, a cleat hitch. Small bollards get a few round turns, secured with locking turns. Big bollards get the same as do pilings or Samson posts.

The reason that we use round turns and Rolling Hitches so much is that they are easy and safet to release while under a load, in addition to being simple to put in.

Most definitely the "rolling hitch".  I frequently employ it to relieve the load from another line (ie. anchor or mooring line).
