It is often not the main components of an engine which fail, but the
marinization components.  Availablity my vary by country.  For example I had a
genset which had a Yanmar engine.  I had a leaking seal on the injector pump,
and took the injector pump to a Bosch repair facility.  They "Fixed" it, so
that the pump failed, wide open and damaged the crankshaft and bearings.  (The
O ring on the seal was just a thousand's too tight).  Although Yanmar parts
were available in Greece, none for those specific engine.  When I got to
France, every villiage had parts for that engine, since it was a common water
pump engine in farms.  Same for Ford or Perkins (dating my self) tractor
blocks.  You could get the basic engine parts but marinization parts were hard
to get.

Sometimes some JB weld, a bit of sheet metal and some bailing wire will get
you a few miles to help.  Also having the ability to do proceedures on
engines, such as a valve job, or replace injector pump lines, by pass a lift
pump adapt another pump to cool an engine or air conditioner will make do
until you get to a port.

Good voyaging!
