Hello all

I did one of these installations a while back this was a Furono I had never
done this before and when I got and started reading the manual about the
grounding requirements I almost threw up. I could see no practical way to run the 3"
copper strap specified the only advise I could get from Furono was to "hire a
professional" After poking around for a while I learned that Icom had the
best info on grounding and the best telephone tech help. ( I wish I had bought an
Icom)

After After having a conversation with one of there engineers I decided to
use the 3  5/8" copper lines that carry the hydraulic fluid for the steering
system in place of running the 3" copper strap. So I mounted the antenna
alongside the flybridge the coupler or tuner under the flybridge console and the
transceiver overhead in the pilothouse. Ran 3" copper strap from coupler to 3
hydraulic lines then used 3" strap to tie the hydraulic lines together they were
already electrically common just a belt and suspenders kind of thing.

Then in engine space I ran a 3' strap from hydraulic lines to 4 fuel tanks
and engine blocks both of which were already bonded to the ground system. When I
got done the set up worked but I had no way of knowing how well. So I hired a
local electronics outfit to check it they said the signal was quite strong
that was 3 years ago been using it ever since when conditions are right I can
speak to my old buds from NY while in Tampa area I'm told that's good for a
plastic boat? I'm still a little concerned about using the copper steering lines
as a conductor but I can see no signs of problems.
