Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsI really need some simplw help, not instructions on how to do it. It is way
more complex than I care to understand. I need to download the two forms needed
to import a firearm into Canada. It is I am sure a simple thing to do. My
copy of Adobe reader is broken, and it is broken in a way I cannot remove it to
install a new copy. I will go to a shop when I can and get it fixed. Please no
help for this. It's over my head. Could someone please go to the website below
and down load the 2 documents I need, convert them to Word and e mail them to
me as an attachment. I am frustrated past any measure of reason at this point.
Thanks in advance.

Maybe someone else will have better luck, but my version of Adobe limits my
"Save As Type" to PDF files. It will not make a DOC type file for me. I
suspect no version of Adobe will be able to. The formatting capabilities of
Adobe are far more complex that MS Word.

Yea, the full version does.
As to the complications and frustrations of a gun permit, just applying for
one as a Canadian gets to the frustration point that it just ain't worth it.
Perhaps that's the idea behind it.
Good luck with it.

Brian -- I have attached them as "TIFF" documents -- which you should be
able to open and print. If you are unable to, let me know right away and I
can get something else to you.

Can you not go to the Control Panel, select Delete Programs
and then delete your bad Adobe Reader? It should be simple
to do. Then you just need to go get a new copy of the free
(and up-to-date) Adobe reader.

Brian,
I would like to help you, but it will be hard. There is no reasonable way
of converting PDF documents to Word. The other way around works fine (in
fact that is what Adobe PageMaker is all about), but the only way that Adobe
allows conversion is to save the document as a JPG image. I did that, and
could/will send you the JPG's if you really want, but I suspect that you
would be even more frustrated formatting them into usable/printable pages.
So, while I have "Been there and done that" and understand/sympathize with
the Please don't "help" me approach, it just 'aint gonna work.
I can empathize with your frustration, and I bet that somehow the adobe .INF
file that your Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs would need to do the
job is what is hosed or accidentally removed, and thus the removal will not
work. I will say that I bet that if you simply went to your Windows
Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and browsed to My Computer - C Drive -
Program files and then simply removed (delete to trash) the Adobe folder,
rebooted the computer, and then went to:
http://adobeacrobat-8.com/index.asp?PID=02ea59e6-b795-4459-9c62-e26a4f2db084&gclid=CMHL4aPAzIoCFQ0qUAodh26idA
and download/installed the new Adobe that you would be back in business.
Ken.

To all who are not exactly computer literate-
Until today's response about using what
I would call "outdated" and "not ready
for prime-time" computer apps, allow me
to dispel some rather interesting, but
way-off base impressions about Adobe
Acrobat.
Adobe Acrobat is the standard for using
ANY document on ANY platform on ANY
computer. To say that you can't make an
MS Word document from a PDF is absolute
rubbish. If you have a PDF, all you need is
Adobe Acrobat. So let's say you own own
a PC and you did a normal thing for most
PC users and screwed up a simple app
such as Acrobat Reader. Now you need to
print the document.
You are not tech savvy enough to reinstall
the FREE app from Adobe. Just make a copy
of the document and have a friend with
Adobe Acrobat print it out for you. Only about
98% of all computers in the WORLD have a
copy of the FREE Adobe Reader and they can
print it for you. OR, if you afraid of asking
a friend to print it, trot down to the nearest
Kinko's or quick print shop with your floppy
disk and have them print it. If that sounds too
difficult, carefully write down the exact location
on the WWW (that's world-wide web) and take
that into the same place and have them print it
for you.
BTW, if Kinko's or the quick print shop are up
to speed with Acrobat 8 professional, they can
save that same document as a MS Word file
and you can print it on your ancient PC.
BTW, with the new Adobe Acrobat Reader, you
can download the file, AND digitally sign the
document. That is in the free instructions how
to do that, and the document, digitally signed,
is a legitimate document here in the United States.
I don't know about our friends in Canada, however
it may be because Canada does accept some US
documents. You may just check with the authorities
on that.
Another feature of Acrobat 8 is the ability to hold
live teleconferences with up to 14 other people
whether they have cameras on their computers or
not. It's a really cool part of Adobe Acrobat Connect.
Want to know more?
Go to:
https://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/
That URL will give a lot of information.
If that seems to be too much, maybe you should use
smoke signals because you really should have
a computer. Or, as the ads sa: Buy a Mac.
It's really easy to use. Go into an Apple Store
and be prepared to be amazed at what you can
do on a Mac. Still afraid of leaving the fold of
OPC Users? No problem there. Still but a Mac
and use Parallels. You can run your PC apps on
the Mac using your PC apps and when you get stuck,
you will be able to switch to the Mac and still
get all your work more easily. Yes, you have to buy
a lot of software, but it beats having to have
friends do everything else you can't.
Arsen't computters fun?

Rick Redfern

To all those involved in these threads:
Please take the discussions regarding Adobe offline. It has ceased to be
(and maybe never was) relevant to traveling the Great Loop. Please do
not post any more emails on this subject.
Please keep any posts regarding the canadian firearms documents relevant
to the documents themselves (obtaining, completing, submitting, etc.).
I will be filtering this subject to make certain that posts are, indeed,
relevant; therefore there may be a delay in those postings arriving to
the list.
Thank you,
