Highlights of reports received June 19 through June 26 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include UPLAND SANDPIPER,
NASHVILLE WARBLER, PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, "LAWRENCE'S
WARBLER", SEDGE WREN, CLAY-COL. SPARROW and PINE WARBLER.
June 22, 2 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were found north of the
Iroquois Refuge, in a pasture on the west side of Posson
Road, between Fletcher Chaple and East Shelby Roads.
In Niagara County, New York State Breeding Bird Atlas
observers found a NASHVILLE WARBLER carrying food on Quaker
Road in the Town of Hartland. In the 1988 Atlas, NASHVILLE
WARBLERS were not found breeding anywhere in Niagara County.
Other highlights from Hartland were an unusual CHESTNUT-S.
WARBLER, also on Quaker Road, plus SORA, BLACK-BILLED
CUCKOO, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, RED-HEADED WDPKR., RED-BELLIED
WDPKR., BL.-GR. GNATCATCHER, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, CERULEAN
WARBLER and ORCHARD ORIOLE.
In the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, a pair of
PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS were reported along the canal to the
west of Meadville Road. The pair were about 200 yards past
the wooden bridge over the canal. A single male PROTHONOTARY
WARBLER had been reported for several weeks at the this
location.
Along the same road, a breeding "LAWRENCE'S WARBLER"
continues to be found, off the west side of Meadville Road,
south of houses at Owens Road. Follow the path through the
field, then to the wooded trail and a small stream. This
"LAWRENCE'S WARBLER" is apparently paired with a female
"BREWSTER'S WARBLER"-type BLUE-WINGED WARBLER. And the SEDGE
WREN remains at Mallard Overlook on Sour Springs Road in the
Iroquois Refuge.
CLAY-COL. SPARROWS are still being reported in Cattaraugus
County. Two or three were found again in the Town of
Ashford, a short distance north of Thomas Corners Road and
Bond Road. There were also 2 VESPER SPARROWS just west of
the this intersection. Nearby at Keller and Hillicker Roads
in the Town of Yorkshire, there were 5 CLAY-COL. SPARROWS
with 6 PRAIRIE WARBLERS and a BROAD-WINGED HAWK. MOURNING
WARBLERS were among 11 warbler species noted in Ashford.
Also in Cattaraugus County, at Bird Swamp on Route 242 in
the Town of Machias, BALD EAGLE and 9 VIRGINIA RAILS.
Yet another location for PINE WARBLER, in the Town of Elma,
a PINE WARBLER has apparently been present the last few
years in a yard on West Blood Road.
Other reports this week - a good find in the Town of
Amherst, 2 SORAS plus a BOBOLINK and 2 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS
in the marsh and field at the entrance to the Ellicott Creek
Trailway in Williamsville. At Tifft Nature Preserve in
Buffalo, D.-CREST. CORMORANT and 3 GREAT EGRETS at Lake
Kirsty. And in Buffalo, an adult PEREGRINE FALCON roosting
on one of the Richardson Towers next to Buffalo State
College, was being harassed by an AMERICAN KESTREL.
Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, July 3. Please
call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may report
sightings after the tone. Thank you for calling and
reporting to Dial-a-Bird.
