TWL: High Power Cell Phone

I know this has come up on the list before, but I've used every search term
combination I can think of and haven't been able to find it.

Someone was talking about having a higher power cell phone installed on the
boat than your normal little hand set cell.  Better antenna too.  Some kind
of base station box that you plug regular POTS hand sets into if I remember
correctly.

Can whoever has this set up send me a note?  I'd like to get some details
about it from you to see if it would be applicable to my setup.

Thanks.

Bill

To whomsoever responds to this request: Make it a public response
please - I and a "few" others are also interested.

Thanks in advance - George of Scaramouche

Motorola makes several for that purpose.  3 watts output rather than the .5
watts or so on the portables.  You want to make sure it will work on your
service network.  Talk to your local service provider.  A common name for
the phones is Attach or Briefcase phones.  Most phone makers should have
something similar.

External cell phone antennas are readily available - check West marine.

I probably mentioned this setup. I've used a 3 watt "bag" analog cell phone
with a 2 foot Shakespeare marine cellular antenna and a cellular connection
box, a Motorola S1936C, "The Cellular Connection"  I paid $200 for it
several years ago, but you can find them on ebay for lots less. The
connection box allows you to plug in any analog phone device, including a
fax, regular desk phone or ordinary modem. It provides dial tone to these
devices and handles the call for you.  I have Verizon service and this
setup work all over the Chesapeake.
