Hi everyone,
The 17th annual Linwood CBC was held December 29th. Temperatures ranged
from +3 to +5 degrees. Winds were SW, 15-20km/hr. We had fairly thick fog
in the morning and off and on fog throughout the afternoon, with drizzle
in the afternoon, turning to light rain to close-out the day.
A total of 39 count participants gave the count excellent coverage, with 59
species, above the count's average of 53.2 species. The cumulative species
total now sits at 103.
Total number of individuals was above average, with 13,625 (ave. is 12,829).
New species:
Tundra Swan – 12 near Linwood; 4 were observed just outside of the count
circle
Ruddy Duck – 2 on Conestoga Lake
Hermit Thrush – 1 at Conestoga Lake C.A.
*Unusual species: *
Hooded Merganser – 1 (5th record)
Peregrine Falcon – count-week (seen previously on 2 other counts)
Carolina Wren – 1 (2nd record)
White-crowned Sparrow – 1 (3rd record)
High-counts: Golden-crowned Kinglet – 56 (prev high 44), Winter Wren – 2
(prev high 1), Cedar Waxwing – 138 (prev high 78), House Finch – 213 (prev
high 123), Purple Finch – 12 (prev high 4), Pine Siskin – 614 (prev high
176), Dark-eyed Junco – 557 (prev high 481),
Low-counts: Mallard (59; prev low of 85), Red-tailed Hawk (36; prev low
of 47), Rough-legged Hawk (10; prev low of 42),
*Notable misses: *Snowy Owl
