A few years ago, I was part of a delivery crew of four for a 64 foot racing sailboat from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas. In spite of the fact that the delivery captain and his mate had hundreds of trouble-free ocean deliveries in their resume, the owner's insurance company demanded that the boat have a crew of 4 for a 1,000 mi ocean trip that was going to operate 24/7. I'm not sure whether the time of year had any bearing on the insurance company's requirement, but I'm sure they felt better with having two people on watch on a continuous basis. This was the first time I had ever encountered an insurance company telling the owner what a safe crew size consisted of, but the owner wisely absorbed the extra cost and everyone was happy.
