I'll just pass on another thought for consideration. I completed the loop
in November 2005, with 7 months on the water. I used Verizon cell phone and
have the slow speed phone mobile office. On the trip we got in the habit of
answering and looking at emails during the day and at 9 pm, when cell phone
minutes were free, starting the computer and pushing send and receive. It
worked 99% of the time and was free except for the cell phone monthly
charge. To use the aircard you pay an additional $49 or $59, whichever
promotion you get. To us it was not worth the extra to have faster speed.
Our procedure just allowed the computer to do the work after 9 pm and it
didn't matter how long it took. When I needed to check the internet I found
that the cell phone mobile office was not that bad, especially with a cool
glass of wine at my right arm.
I know some people enjoy speed and have it now access. If you don't, then
the mobile office still works fine for some of us slow speed ready to relax
folks, especially if we need to save the $49. It is really great that
technology gives us boaters so many options today. We just have to decide
whether we all step up to the latest or whether yesterdays technology is ok.
Just a thought.
