By the way. BATF says 18" barrel is minimum for civilian use on a shotgun, 16" is for a rifle! Use a pistolgrip or folding stock to make a shorter, quicker handling shotgun (minimum OAL 26").

Ron is 100% on.  I should have clarified the 14" barrel is restricted to law enforcement agencies.  You and I can't buy it or leagally own it.

Before SA Donnie gets us all in jail (courtesy of the BATF) it should be
noted that us ordinary folk are restricted to shotguns of 16.5" barrel
length or longer.

| Just a bit of input concerning this thread.
|
| Richard, you are entirely correct in that the sound of a .12 bore being
racked may not have any effect on the baddie.  This is especially true if
that particular person either has never heard the sound before, or is unable
to distinguish the sound because of outside noise, drugs, etc.
|
| The purpose of a gun is not to scare a person, it is to kill that person.
If you are not fully prepared, both physically and mentally, to look into a
person's eyes from seven feet and intentionally decide to employ extreme
violence to take that persons life, you may wish to rethink your defensive
posture. This is a decision that each of us have to make based on our own
situation, and I am not trying to discourage anyone from chosing to employ a
gun.
|
| As an aside, know the law.  It varies from state to state, with some
states having "all possible retreat" laws, under which you would surely be
prosecuted if you leave a safe refuge, i.e. master cabin, and confront and
kill someone in the salon or on deck.  These laws require all possible
retreat prior to employing deadly force.
|
| The choice of weapons is also individual.  Having fired
| thousands of rounds from a Remington 870, it's the one I am most
comfortable with.  Easy to operate and to field strip for cleaning, which
must be done on a regular basis.  It takes less than 10 minutes to do a good
job.
| Barrel length is important mostly from a storage stand point.  Keep in
mind that from an 870 with a 14 inch barrel, the spread for OO buck is only
one inch for each yard of travel downrange.  This translates to a spread of
five inches at 15 yards.  Clearly not the street clearing effect urban
legand and TV would have you believe.  It is also easier to employ a short
barrel in tight quarters, moving it quickly around corners and through
doorways.

You should not use a pistol grip or folding stock firearm for defense
purposes.

Should the case end up in court yor want a very benign looking gun sitting
on the exhibit table.

A "mean looking" gun might not favor very well in the eyes of a jury.
