These street-level maps are amazingly detailed, see:

     http://compass.t-mobile.com/default.aspx

If the other carriers would do this, one could make very informed decisions.

Best,

Steve

it would be interesting to know how accurate those
maps really are.

i suspect they are largely out of propagation models and
not a lot of on-the-street power measurements.

that said, some of the propagation models are very good
in general, but the predictions about any one street
corner and the propagation seen there is difficult without
excruciating detail in modelling the environment and the
concomitant computational workload to work out the implications
of thost details.

however, even if the maps are just propagation predictions,
the marketing value of putting them up is obviously profound,
judging from the reaction on just this mailing list.

some marking guy should get a juicy bonus for thinking of this.

cheers,
-mo

ps - cynical about phone companies??? me???
what ever made you think that??

I'm using the Broadband access and so far am very happy, but as others have said some areas there is little or no coverage.  An example is that when I was in Naples my internet access was at about the speed of a 56k modem.  But when in Annapolis, Baltimore, DC, or New York it simply cooks.  I've gotten 1.2 to 1.6 mbps download speeds.  A great deal depends on your signal strength, and I'm looking forward to the day when it is expanded into other regions.

Here's a local map..

Oh if your using this make sure you chose the option titled Broadband Access and V CAST Map.  Then give the address info and thats it.

I was going to use this for a ICW trip we were planning, but I was depressed at the lack of coverage in NC.  It appears as though if you don't hug the barrier islands your pretty much out of luck with any kind of signal.  And unfortunately without a reliable way to communicate on demand back to my work there is no way I can make that trip and be gone for 2+ weeks.  :-(

By the way I have no affiliation with Verizon other then I purchased the card 3 months ago and have been a very happy camper so far..

All good points Mike. The maps are typically quite accurate at street
level, as they drive the areas and measure as they go. Using that and the
propagation model for non-driveable areas ( like the ocean) it comes out
pretty good. This info is used for developing new tower needs and customer
service inquiries.
The other carriers have this in various forms, we use Cingular's every day.
I think it is an enlightened move on T-Mobile's part. It will cut down on
customer queries and set proper customer expectations.
