Errors using projection () w/ imported terrain2stl files

Working on a project and am getting errors trying to get shaped based for islands using:

http://jthatch.com/terrain2stl/

The files import okay, but I keep getting errors trying to project the landmass into a flat area which I can then extrude so as to make a thicker base.

Suggestions? Is there some other tool I should use?
