Dear List,
A number of times when I have been aboard while at the dock. I have
heard a strange kind of crackling sound coming from the V-berth in our
boat. It has sounded like the hull is crackling. I believe I have
heard the same noise on occasion while enjoying time in the engine room.
(small as it may be).
I have not been overly concerned about the noise but got to thinking
maybe something electrical was causing it. Not knowing anything about
grounding an bonding and other matters , that have been discussed on
this board. I thought I might have a problem. A couple of days ago
when I heard the noise(at night) I turned off the main breaker switch on
the boat, to see if the noise went away. It did not.
Looking at the December issue of PASSAGEMAKER page 14, There is a letter
to the editor describing a similar situation. My question is: Have any
of you experienced this type of noise? Would turning off the power at
the boats panel eliminate the noise if it were electrically related?
The editors said it was common for shrimp and other fish to feed under
boats.
Should I be worried , or should I be fishing?

Lynn - Several years ago, aboaut this time of the year, when we purchased
our last boat, the same thing occurred on Saltayre. We were berthed in
Palmetto and later at Twin Dolphins across the river in Bradenton.
The answer turned out to be night feeding or breeding Shrimp !!!! Not
uncommon around there, apparantly, but we don't hear them up here in Ocean
Springs and Biloxi, MS !!!

Fishing it is. Around here we don't have shrimp but in the spring
when the carps spawn they bang their four+ foot bodies against the
boats to dislodge their eggs. And they do that usually at 3 am. I'll
trade your shrimps for my carps anytime. <gin>

Down in Louisiana I kept hearing a thump, thump, thump in the night.
Sounded like someone was hitting the hull with a 2X4 very lightly. It woke
me up several times. Then one night I jumped up and got a flashlight and
went out to look around the hull. Up pops a turtle.
Turtles have no sonar.
Its a jungle down there, we'll have to see what the Chesapeake brings in
the way of critters.

Hi Lyn
I have heard the same noise, and I'm sure that it's water in contact with
the hull in some way.
I have never been bothered by the sound, but next time I'll try to note the
conditions under which it occurs.
Also, noise can be transmitted over a surprisingly long distance under
water...somebodys prop turning several slips away can often be heard
clearly.
I'd be fishing Lyn. heh heh.

What a coincidence, the first time I ever heard this sound was about five
years ago when we sailed into Bradenton and stayed a couple of nights at
Twin Dolphins. We were told the same thing, "Shrimp Feeding" on the growth
on the bottom of the boat? Didn't (and still don't) know if that is true
or not.
