Hello All,

Having put 5-6000 miles under the keel in the last year and in preparation
for another 8-10,000 this year, I've just spent a fair chunk of change and time
going over everything in the holy place, sometimes doing things not because
they needed doing, but just because. For instance, removing all the injectors
and servicing them, (just because).

Everything is back in pristine condition, up to spec, and set to go, with one
exception:

I have Volvo TAMD41A's, made in the two year period when they had "gates" in
the turbos that close at idle, Volvo part # 3826743 "Stop solenoid (electric
magnet). They create back pressure in the engines that make for cleaner burning
(less smoke). One engine needs a new/better used one, since the original has
taken a powder. I don't really need to replace it since it doesn't affect the
operation of the engine, or cause any damage by not having it work, but the
excessive smoke at startup has to be annoying to others in the anchorages! Once
up to temp, the smoking is back to the "normal" 41A level.

A new stop solenoid costs $507 from Volvo, which seems like an awful lot of
money to reduce smoking for 5 minutes.

I'm wondering if anyone on the list has a website or phone number for some
place that sells used Volvo parts, or a Volvo parts distributor that may have
one of these items that has been sitting on the shelf for years, and they want
to just get rid of it cheap. Email me off list if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

John Garrison

Volvo part # 3826743 "Stop solenoid (electric

magnet).

of

money to reduce smoking for 5 minutes.

John,

A solenoid is a solenoid.
Only the mounting is different.
On my Volvo  that runs the gen set I replaced the shutdown solenoid with a
GM off the shelf one  more than 16 yrs ago. Did  have to braze a fitting on
the end of the shaft and drill a another hole in the mounting base. Saved
abt $275+  at that time. The GM was  abt $50.
