10/13 Milford, Milford Point - Our annual Big Sit team counted birds from 4:30am to 7:00pm. Among the tentative tally of 92 species, the biggest rarity was an EARED GREBE spotted early morning by Frank Gallo and seen on and off through the day in the main salt marsh tidal channel N of the outer dune platform (west of the last beachouse). Other highlights included: Am. Wigeon, Gadwall, No. Pintail, 3 COMMON EIDERS, 13 Surf Scoters, Wild Turkey, 3 Clapper Rails, AM GOLDEN-PLOVER, WHIMBREL, Spotted Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher, 6 Bonaparte’s Gulls, 2+ Forster’s Terns, 4 BLACK SKIMMERS, Great Cormorant, American Bittern, 2+ Bald Eagles, Merlin, Peregrine, Common Ravens, Marsh Wren, Am Pipit, Nelson’s & Saltmarsh Sparrows, and Dickcissel. The sunrise, moonset, sunset and moonrise were all spectacular!

Thanks to the 14+ birding visitors who stopped by to offer support (while looking for the Eared Grebe). This Count was conducted as a fundraiser for the CT Audubon Coastal Center. Anyone wishing to contribute can contact the Center at 203-878-7440.
