You'll see that the membership largely consists of organizations within the K-16 education arena. One purpose for NCL membership is to bring adult literacy/adult ed to the table. However, with the exception of the years when Jeff Carter was on the CEF board, there have been virtually no opportunities to take advantage of that.

Judy's and Regina's points are well taken: The CEF updates give us info that we would not have easy access to otherwise. Another way to get it would be to have our own contract with an advocacy consultant (as COABE does with PennHill Group). I looked into that option a few years back, and I can say for certain that such a contract would cost quite a bit more than $1,000 a year. However, it would also provide a much more extensive array of options, including connections with Hill staffers.
