We had this problem with aircraft hangers and put an OWL (plastic) on the
cross members. Did the
trick .... it seems that birds do not like owls at all!!!

Best thing I've seen is a dead seagull. Kept them away until it was an
unrecognizable dirty feather ball, a couple of years later.
